Flamethrowers, Ice hockey and The Mars Volta feature in Finnish movie about love and rebellion
Our latest film sync licensing project, Thick Lashes Of Lauri Mäntyvaara (Lauri Mäntyvaaran tuuheet ripset), is the debut feature from Finnish writer & director Hannaleena Hauru.
Although it is her first feature, Hauru’s short films have been making waves in Oberhausen, Berlinale Generations, Cannes Critics’ week, Uppsala and Tampere with their precise, poetic atmosphere and strong character inner-worlds.
Thick Lashes Of Lauri Mäntyvaara begins with best friends and Satu and Heidi waging an anarchic love rebellion campaign on the pretentious summer weddings that overtake their district of the Finnish archipelago. However when Heidi falls head-over-heels in love with the titular ice hockey star Lauri Mantyvaara, Satu is forced to reevaluate love, friendship and revolution.
The movie is an offbeat and energetic tale, and one we are proud to have worked on for a key scene of the film. The blistering “Intertiatic Esp” by progressive art-rockers The Mars Volta is woven deeply into the storyline; Satu has just pulled off a stunt to kidnap her best friend’s crush from an ice hockey match, and then lays low in the aftermath in a hidden location, listening to the song on shared headphones with Heidi’s brother, Henri.
