About me
Genuine Guy is an electronic musician, writer and DJ currently living in Berlin.
Obsessed with rhythm, percussion and repetition, dance music is his primary medium. As a producer he has received much praise from luminaries in the field such as Feadz and Kid606, who has also released his music. As a solo DJ and as part of the 20jazzfunkgreats music blog he has played across Europe with acts as diverse as Cosmo Vitelli, Metronomy and Drop the Lime. Something of a 'meta-producer', behind the beating heart of his fast paced and highly original early work lies a more philosophical mind, lending his work a deeper meaning past its only apparent function of making people dance.
Genuine Guy has released 2 EPs on Tigerbeat6's dance sub-label Tigerbass. Though stylistically very different, the EPs are characterised by stark, stripped back grooves, clever use of repetition, compared and contrasted genre conventions and a hint of social commentary, with each EP being executed to a clearly defined concept. Genuine Guy sometimes produces videos as a visual extension to his ideas.
Although behind the scenes his music is invested with more intellectual leanings, he believes that art should be as fun, engaging and accessible as possible, and often things perceived as mere 'entertainment' can one of its most powerful forms.
As a regular contributor to the 20jazzfunkgreats music blog, Genuine Guy seeks to discover and support like minded artists, both emerging and established, and also to further explore his ideas about music. He is also the brians behind their new project 'Dream Cycle' which aims to encourage a series of collaborations between disparate artists, in order to create a new dialogue between different musical communities, styles and modes of production.
Inspired by living in 3 different cities (Brighton, London and Berlin), and exploring their secular music scenes, the project is an extension of his attempts to create this dialogue in his own music.
It is also with these ideas in mind that he turns his attention fully to further deconstructions of Disco. As one of the most popular examples of a musical genre that defied social boundaries such as race, sexuality and class he hopes to explore its role in an age where some of these boundaries have been broken, yet where dance music has lost much of its soul and musicality due to its ease of production.
