Surrounded is Mårten Rydell (vocals, guitar)/ Marcus Knutsson (guitar)/ Tom Malmros (bass)/ Johannes Linder (drums)/ Erik Gustafsson (keys). Formed in 2000, the result of a year-long musical experiment in a remote studio in the forested south of the country, Sweden's 'Surrounded' have since continued to embrace and nurture their combination of spacey instrumentation, orchestral arrangements, surreal lyrics and melodic, intricately crafted compositions.
This year, Surrounded take you on a fresh voyage of discovery, delving deeper into their sound with the upcoming 'Oppenheimer and Woodstock' released through One Little Indian on the 21st June. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian), Bill Racine (The Flaming Lips) and Paul Mahajan (TV on the Radio), the band’s follow up to The Nautilus Years is filled with huge ethereal epics like “Space Atlantic Satellite” and “The Visible Man.”
Influenced initially by "Meddle"-era Pink Floyd and ELO, the bands musical palette was subsequently broadened by more contemporary influences like The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, Mark Eitsel, Wheat and Built to Spill which have all impacted on Surrounded's songs, a broad soundscape overflowing with mellotrons, strings, samples and layers of hushed electric guitars.
The journey has just begun for this band of Swedes as 2010 is primed to be the year Surrounded reaches beyond the borders of Scandinavia. To this end the band made their US debut last month at SXSW and plan to tour this summer and autumn in support of the new album.
