Formed in 2000, the result of a year-long musical experiment in a remote studio in the forested south of the country, Sweden's Surrounded have since continued to embrace and nurture their combination of spacey instrumentation, orchestral arrangements, surreal lyrics and melodic, intricately crafted compositions.
This year, Surrounded take you on a fresh voyage of discovery, delving deeper into their sound with the upcoming Oppenheimer and Woodstock released through One Little Indian on the 21st June. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian), Bill Racine (The Flaming Lips) and Paul Mahajan (TV on the Radio), the band’s follow up to The Nautilus Years is filled with huge ethereal epics like “Space Atlantic Satellite” and “The Visible Man.”
Speaking to Spinner, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Marten Rydell says of the new record: “Production-wise and regarding arrangements, we've been working more as a unit instead of merely doing our parts. I'm certainly no Pol Pot in the studio… the choice of tracks to be figured on the album also has been very democratic. To hand over the mixing procedure to such skilled guys as Tony, Paul and Bill was very relieving and uplifting.”
As to the title, Mårten explains “It’s been suggested that it could be read as a metaphor for ‘war and peace’ but to me it is more ambiguous: Oppenheimer lead "The Manhattan Project" but was at an early stage morally troubled by it’s effects and started working post-war toward disarnament. Woodstock had it’s aura of peace and love, but one can question where it has subsequently lead western civilization: individualism, condo loneliness and diverse problems to do with feeling ‘loved’.”
Influenced initially by "Meddle"-era Pink Floyd and ELO, the bands musical palette was subsequently broadened by more contemporary influences like The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, Mark Eitsel, Wheat and Built to Spill which have all impacted on Surrounded's songs, a broad soundscape overflowing with mellotrons, strings, samples and layers of hushed electric guitars.
The journey has just begun for this band of Swedes as 2010 is primed to be the year Surrounded reaches beyond the borders of Scandinavia. To this end the band made their US debut last month at SXSW and plan to tour this summer and autumn in support of the new album.
